"It is not necessary, Captain Frazier," she said, smiling. "I ask only out of interest. You see, Captain, I find the human condition to be a most curious anomaly. The desire for revenge is a purely human emotion. No other creature harbors so dark a need."
Charlie Frazier, now that he had found the courage to express his desires, was in no mood to dwell on the philosophical aspects of his request. He had come all this distance to buy a service, a service that he was told only the Witch of Sixkill could provide. He was a practical man; now he was interested in the nuts and bolts of the plan. Now he wanted to know how and when she would do it.
Finally, the Caron woman unfolded the piece of paper and looked at it. She studied it momentarily and laid it on the table beside her. "Your desires will be tended to," she assured him.
"When?" he blurted.
"You will know," she said calmly.
"How?"
The woman dismissed his question with a subtle wave of her hand.
"Look, you haven't told me how much this is going to cost me." The dam had broken; the matter was out in the open. They were discussing it now just like any business transaction. He had asked for something, and she had agreed to supply it. Despite the ethereal as-
